U Got The 'Look'

Thanks to the lovely Jane Isaac, I’ve been tagged in this blog game which involves searching your current WIP for the word ‘look’ and posting the surrounding paragraphs (then tagging another 5 writers to do the same – the WIP can be a short story, a poem, a novel, whatever you’ve got…)

I decided to post the end of the of the first chapter of the crime novel I’m currently working on. It’s the first time anyone’s seen any of it, so it’ll be interesting to know what you think!

I could only assume that the lack of security had been a conscious effort to avoid suspicion; that adding a padlock might make it look like someone had something to hide.

But someone did have something to hide, and my initial thoughts were that ‘someone’ must be Mr Jackson – after all, he was the one trying to keep us away from his experiment. I had a wild thought that the lid might be moving by itself, that maybe something inside the container was causing it to lift off – natural gases from the composting contents, something like that – nothing more sinister… although I wouldn’t have ruled anything out, not when you started to piece it all together and add it to the other stuff that’d been going on since we moved in.

I picked up the spade and glanced back up at the window, but there was definitely no-one there.

So what now?

Nothing was making sense, and I knew I should phone the police – leave it up to them to work out what the hell was going on. But I knew I wouldn’t. In fact, I wouldn’t be telling anyone anything until I’d investigated further, because those hand bones were definitely too small to belong to the woman I was searching for.
