Today’s willing victim, Lucie Whitehouse, grew up in Warwickshire, studied Classics at Oxford, then moved to London where she worked briefly in journalism before finding her niche in publishing. Her crime novel, Critical Incidents, was published by Fourth Estate in 2019, and her brand new thriller, Risk of Harm, is out next week. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.
Take it away, Lucie…
Who do you love?
Russell Crowe and Antony Bourdain. Graham Greene, Hilary Mantel and Lady Gaga.
What were you in a previous life?
Evidence suggests an owl.
How often do you change your sheets?
Every week. There are marriage-endangering piles of unsorted paperwork and my daughter’s craft projects everywhere in here but clean sheets are of the essence.
How many times have you seen Top Gun?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Efficient. There’s no chance of that, though, so I’ll say a singer-songwriter. Or a psychologist.
Do you empty your own hoover bag?
God, no. My husband’s mob name/nickname (absolutely true) is Vinnie Vacuums so he’s got it covered.
What are you wearing?
Exercise gear, believe it or not. To borrow a line from the great Jennifer Weiner, experience shows that if you get into your gear first thing in the morning, there’s a greater likelihood you’ll be in it all day.
Who would you rather play golf with? Michael McIntyre, Take That or the Queen?
Can I take Queen, no article, instead?
When was the last time you were arrested?
I never have been, though I’ve tried my best. It’s really quite disappointing. It’d be a great research opportunity, too.
Is there life on other planets?
Yes, but not as we know it.
